Martin Hirsch, the director general of Public Assistance-Hospitals of Paris, expects a peak in Covid patients in “7 or 8 days”. He says he is ready to help regions in more difficulty than Ile-de-France.

The director general of the AP-HP Martin Hirsch hopes that the inflection of entries in intensive care will be confirmed.

We have to be careful, because with the Covid, there have already been unpleasant surprises. But the director general of the Assistance publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), Martin Hirsch, notes “A beginning of a shift” the curve of Covid patient admissions in Ile-de-France: eight days ago, there were 110 intensive care admissions per day and 500 hospitalizations; 3-4 days ago, these values had fallen to 80 and 400 per day, respectively. “We can be happy to have made the curfew” and having confined ” not too late “, he said this Monday morning on France Inter.

If the behaviors “Continue to be careful”, “we can hope that it continues”, he continued. However, this improvement will be done gradually. The peak, that is to say the moment when the Ile-de-France establishments will welcome the most patients simultaneously in intensive care and hospitalization, has not passed. “We still have 7 or 8 days of increase in the number of patients”, predicts Martin Hirsch, who is also a little more optimistic about the ability of hospitals to continue to provide non-covid care under satisfactory conditions.

In this second wave, Ile-de-France is not in as bad a position as during the first. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Occitanie and Normandy regions, which had been less or less affected by the first wave, are more in difficulty. “It will not be the same in all regions”, underlined the boss of the AP-HP, noting that the rate of doubling of the volume of the epidemic had slowed down in Ile-de-France, but remained high in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

“We say we are available in the coming days if we can help regions in more difficult situations”, he proposed. He presented this offer as a fair return: “It seems logical to me: we benefited from the solidarity of all of France during the month of March! ” Since the second wave, patient evacuations have already taken place to various regions of France and even in Germany.

In addition, the AP-HP is ready to help conduct rapid Covid tests on high school students, in order to facilitate safe pursuit of schooling. Legal obstacles must be removed since they are minors, but Martin Hirsch seems confident. He also said that scientists want to discuss with civil society actors so that health messages are “Audible”.
